The lyre, also known as λύρα (lýra) in Greek, is a string instrument that was popular during Greek classical antiquity and beyond. In classical antiquity, the lyre was typically played by strumming it with a plectrum, similar to how a guitar or zither is played, as opposed to plucking the strings with fingers like a harp. The fingers of the player's free hand would be used to mute any unwanted strings in the chord. In later times, variations of the lyre known as "lyres" were played with a bow in regions such as Europe and parts of the Middle East, including instruments like the Arabic rebab and its offspring, such as the Byzantine lyra.
